Because one-half of the population of the Congo is 15 or under, they are not counted in the above literacy ratings.  Given the Congo's recent history, conflict along the eastern coast and poor economic conditions, many children are not able to attend school at all.  There are few books, many deteriorating school buildings, and overall very poor learning conditions.

Children at Kamuangila Elementary sit crowded on tiny bamboo benches in a mud hut with a thatch roof.  They have no books.  They have no paper and pen to copy from the chalk board. Yet, they are eager to learn.  There are several dozen children watching from the outside because they cannot afford to go to school.
